New Building Block Features Available!

There are two new features available to you in Blackboard Learn, which were added as building blocks this past Friday:

1.  Student View

You now have the ability to view your course with a student view mode that is more accurate than the one you get by switching Edit Mode OFF.

To initiate the Student View, click Course Tools from the Control Panel and then click Student View:

Course Tools and Student View

When you’re ready to exit the student view, click the Teacher View link, which will appear at the bottom of your course menu:

2. Groups Viewer

If you are utilizing groups in your course, this feature makes it easy to see which of your students have been assigned to which groups!

To access the Groups Viewer, click Course Tools from the Control Panel and then click Groups Viewer:

Course Tools and Groups Viewer

You will see a list of all your students, with their corresponding groups indicated on the right side:

List of student names and corresponding group numbers

You will also have two buttons at the bottom of the list, which allow you to either Print the list, or Download it as a spreadsheet file!

We hope that these two building blocks will improve and streamline your teaching experience in Blackboard Learn.

Making Courses Available to Students

The word (unavailable) may appear after your course link in Blackboard Learn:

Course link with the word unavailable

You may know that all courses are imported with a Start Date and End Date, which regulate when students are able to view your course content, but if your course is (unavailable), it will not be seen by students when the Start Date arrives!

By default, courses are imported from Banner to Blackboard as “unavailable”.  Courses must be made available in order to be provide access to students.  If you see (unavailable) following your course link, and you want your students to have access to your Blackboard content when the course begins, please do the following:

1. Click your course link to enter the course.

2. On the Control Panel, click Customization.  Then click Properties.

Control Panel Customization Properties

3. Under Set Availability, you will see Make Course Available, with “No” currently selected:

Course availability no

Switch it to “Yes”:

4.  Click Submit.

Your course will no longer show the (unavailable) label, and on the Start Date of your course, students will be able to access your content!
